Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website

For most local Sri Lankan businesses, the free Google listing brings in more customers than the website does. Most are set up badly or not at all.

If you run a shop, salon, clinic, garage or restaurant, here is an uncomfortable truth: your Google Business Profile — the free listing that appears in Maps and beside search results — will probably bring you more customers than your website will.

And it costs nothing.

Why it outperforms a website

When someone searches "dentist near me" or "car service Kandy", Google shows a map with three businesses above everything else. That block gets the majority of the clicks. Your website, if it appears at all, is below it.

Being in that block is not about paying. It is about three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot change distance. You can absolutely change the other two.

The setup most businesses get wrong

The category is too vague. "Shop" is not a category. Pick the most specific primary category that describes your main service, then add secondary categories. This single field has more influence on when you appear than almost anything else.

There are three photos, all from 2021. Listings with regular fresh photos get significantly more engagement. Add photos monthly — the shop front, staff working, finished work, the interior. Phone photos are fine. Consistency beats quality here.

Hours are wrong. Nothing kills trust faster than someone driving to a closed shop. Set special hours for Poya days and public holidays in advance.

Nobody has asked for reviews. Review count and recency both matter. Ask every satisfied customer, in person, at the moment they are happy — not by mass text message a week later. A short link saved in your phone makes this a ten-second ask.

Reviews go unanswered. Reply to every review, good and bad. A calm, specific reply to a negative review reassures future customers far more than the absence of criticism would.

Things worth doing that almost nobody does

  • Post weekly. Offers, new arrivals, updates. Posts appear on your listing and signal that the business is active.
  • Fill in the services list. Each service you add is another term you can match.
  • Answer your own FAQs in the Q&A section. Perfectly allowed, and it puts accurate answers where customers look.
  • Turn on messaging if you can genuinely reply within a few hours.

Then connect it to your website

Once your listing is right, your website should reinforce it: the same business name, address and phone number written identically in both places, an embedded map, and pages that match the services on your listing. Google reads that consistency as confirmation that you are a real, established business.

The listing brings them in. The website closes them. You need both — but if you only have time for one this month, start with the free one.
